The general recommendation is 3 work sets per exercise (not counting warmups). Of course, if these are REALLY hard sets, you can do fewer work sets. After 3 really hard sets though, I fail to see how you will be able to accomplish much more.
What I know is that the rules have been changed recently, and all matches will be 3 sets exept for men's Grand Slams (5 sets). So now the masters series final should be only 3 sets.
